How can I make studying abroad affordable?

I’m a rising senior in high school who really wants to study abroad in college. However, I know it can be expensive and I’m wondering if there are any secrets to getting studying abroad scholarships/financial aid? Or maybe certain programs or companies that offer good student discounts when studying abroad? If anyone has any tips from their studying abroad experience that helped them spend money more efficiently I’d love to hear more about it! #JULY20

Thank you comment icon As far as I know, get the right internships corresponding to your field and try to write some research paper or do a project which could prove to the college that you are an intellectual and skilled. The more you make them believe they need you more than you need them, they will be happy to offer you a scholarship. It helps to go through previous admits who got scholarships, and go through the college websites to see what exactly they would like to see in a student. Krish

Hi Lucy,

I would recommend some research in countries such as Norway, which offers free university studies even for foreign students along with work permit of up to 20hrs per week. This and shared expenses could cover your rent/food/etc.

I would definitely check with your potential college global engagement center, they should be able to tell you all about your different options. They can tell you what courses and programs your school offers or connect you with another service that will help you create your own study abroad experience. They can also tell you what school scholarships you can apply for or other scholarships out there for studying abroad. Some of the times, a semester abroad in a different country is cheaper than studying a semester at your school.
