Tyler’s Answer

Hi Soundarya,

Working at a Software company can be a greatly rewarding career. I think you have made a great first step regarding direction of what industry you would like to work in but now you need to understand in what capacity you would like to work in at a software company.

If you have great intrapersonal skills and a penchant for solving problems Sales might be for you.
As Vikshith's answer mentioned above, Software engineering is a growing field, and there are a lot of opportunities out there for you in that field as well.
If you love Numbers you can be a CPA at a software firm. The options are limitless like at any company but I think you should spend some time to understand what makes you happy and apply that to a certain position within a software company.

Good Luck!

Lei’s Answer

Software company offers a variety of career options. Given how fast software/internet businesses grow now, it is worth spending time to identify career path that fits you.

R&D (Research & Development) is the normally the biggest department for almost all software companies. If you like writing computer program (i.e. coding), becoming a software developer is a great choice. Practice your coding skills.

GTM (Go To Market) is another good choice. If you like customer facing activities (like speaking/showing with customers), try to expand your perception of software company beyond just R&D. Think about how you can build a solution together with your customer, how you can propose a solution and influence customer's purchasing decision. There is a lot of fun there. Communication skill and personal skill need to be prepared, besides your technical skills.

Hope you think broadly when you research your possibilities in software company. Cheers.

Gajanan’s Answer

Hello there

Find job opportunities: Software engineering is a rapidly growing field. You have a good chance of immediate employment, although you may start as a programmer and work your way up to software development. Start searching before your degree is up:
Colleges often help their alumni obtain a position. Talk to your professors, department staff, and the career services office about finding job opportunities.
A large percentage of jobs happen through networking. Use your personal contacts, and meet people in the field through career meet ups and conferences.
Check job search websites regularly. Create a profile and post your resume to professional sites and use them for networking as well as job applications.

Best of luck for your future.

There are variety of jobs in software industry. There are also special opportunities provided by some company to support and train university students with software background (e.g Samsung Electronics - Software Membership Program). Use also your personal contacts, and visit career conferences so that you can discuss directly with the hiring department or software engineers working at the company. the most important thing is that you grow your programming skill if you are interested to start your career as a software engineer.
