Among the various hard and soft skills, including leadership, what are some other expertise recruiters are looking for, regardless of which industry to work for?

Again, my name is David, a currently rising sophomore in college, who is majoring in Information Technology. Although my primary focus is on web development, I'm also curious to know what it's like to work in an environment other than that of my school, and at home. This is important to me because I want to get a head start before entering my next semester, the time to prepare for getting a co-op. #career #career-counseling #corporate-finance #women-in-finance

Mark’s Answer

Hi David,

My experience is that I look for two things in perspective candidates in addition to their technical skills. First is communication - no matter what you are working on you have to communicate with someone both orally and in writing. There is usually communication within a team, with other areas, of the business, and sometimes clients, so this is key. Second is ability to work in a team - hardly anyone works completely alone. Even in very specific software engineering positions there are usually multiple people working on a project including developers, business experts, and testers. This means that working with others is really important to make sure that the project is able to be completed. If someone has technical ability, I can teach them anything they need in regard to the technology, but I can't always teach them how to communicate or be a good team player.

I hope that helps!
Best Wishes, Mark

Hi, David.

As you can tell, being a great team member is important. I ask questions for examples in every interview I give. To that end, have solid examples of how you’ve been an exceptional one.

Also be able to demonstrate how you are and always will continue to look for opportunities to grow for yourself and for the company. As industries look for ways to improve, we need team members that are always doing the same.
Good luck! :-)
Hope
