start in a small agency or even a non-profit, build a great portfolio, network network network, work collaboratively, have confidence and a high bar for yourself, your work and the people you work with...and never say no. sometimes the oddest requests and smallest jobs will let you shine and help you get where you want to be.

acquire an eye for good creative that meets your high bar AND the clients' goals and know how to balance the two. sometimes the best creative is far from the mark of what clients are trying to achieve.

realize that it might be a bit of a slog for a while and always be flexible to recognize opportunities that might be tangential from your ultimate/original goal, but might bring you to a happier, more successful place.

Best of luck!

Hi Matti,
My recommendation would be to see if you can get an internship at a local ad agency. Sometimes they are for the summer or a short period of time. If that's the case, try to obtain more than one before graduating. Agency experience is invaluable to helping you better understand the creative challenges that customer's need addressed and how different agencies work through solving them. I would also recommend you finding a person currently serving as a creative director to be a mentor for you. This can be done through your internship or mentorship programs organized by your school. Your Advertising and Art Professor's may also have contacts at local agencies they can connect you with. A mentor can help guide you through the types of curriculum and internships that would make the most sense for you based on your passion and interests. I hope this helps! Here are some next steps to help get you started.

Carly recommends the following next steps:

Speak to a professor or advisor about internship and mentor programs at your school.
Sign up for free events sponsored by local ad agenies you are interested in to see they type of work they do.
Reach out to local ad agencies directly to inquire about any summer internships that may be available and how to apply.

Gina’s Answer

In college I majored in broadcast journalism and minored in marketing and PR. Broadcast journalism allowed me to know every aspect of media. I also worked for my college paper selling advertising, writing articles and copywriting. The marking and PR minors were extremely relevant to today's society-- and found it very interesting. And my internship was spent with local newspapers, which was also an excellent experience.
