It depends on the school but what a person should do is ask these questions before picking a school. Tests are one thing, make sure to volunteer, join student organizations, build relationships with professors that you may have as they can give more information. Remember you are paying for the school and they should have solutions and resources to help you reach your goals.

My son is in medical school now. Their school identifies "at risk" students based on their performance in classes leading up to the board exams. If students are at risk, tutors are provided that encourage students, help teach them to strengthen their knowledge in weaker areas, and set up study schedules.
