Tequila’s Answer

Hi there. This is a question I'm sure you know is so individualized. For me, I find working with patients who make conscious decisions to not do much to help themselves and place the totality of their health at the hands of the health care profession. I'm talking about self responsibility. There are people who choose not to follow medical advice, take their medications appropriately, and then get upset because they end up in a hospital or have their lives limited by their health status. I'm not addressing people who try. Trying is the most important thing asked of patients. I am also not addressing those with very limited resources who still try to do the best they can with their limited resources. I'm talking about those, for example, who know it's dangerous to smoke around oxygen, but do it anyway; then is admitted for a related burn. When asked if they know it was wrong to smoke when on oxygen, they say yes. That is just one example of the most challenging aspect of working in health care for me.

So, it's important to be professional and keep your judgments to yourself.
