Alison’s Answer

Hi Vanisha,

Students can be evaluated in a number of different ways. For most students, when you hear “evaluation,” the first thing you think of is probably “test.” Formal assessments like tests and quizzes are a common method of evaluating classroom topics. They may contain objective questions (questions that have a definite right or wrong answer, like multiple choice or true/false questions) and/or subjective questions (questions that may be opinion based or have multiple answers, like fill-ins or essays). Tests can even give students the chance to show that they can complete a task (like doing a proof in geometry, for example) or apply their knowledge (such as analyzing a never before seen primary source in social studies).

However, formal tests are definitely not the only way that students are evaluated. Teachers often use more informal assessment techniques as well. Your teacher might observe students as they’re doing independent work, check homework material, or just ask a student a question during a lesson to gauge how well a student understands a topic. The timing of assessments can vary a lot as well. At some point in your educational life, you’ve probably already experienced taking a diagnostic assessment (a pretest for spelling words before you really studied them in elementary school, for example), a formative assessment (maybe after showing you how to solve a type of algebra equation, a teacher has then told you “alright, now you solve this next one on your own so I can see if you’ve got it”), and a summative assessment (like a final exam or a test at the end of a unit in your book that tests the whole unit).

I hope this helps to demystify evaluations a little bit for you. Good luck with your next assessment, whatever it may be!
