How do you know if you are choosing the right major for your career?

I am majoring in Biology (B.S) and want to enter the medical field to be a surgeon. I know biology is a good major for working in the medical field, but are there other majors that would be more beneficial to me for my career plans? Or other more specific majors? #doctor #career #medicine #major #surgery

Hi Anna,

Great question. Biology is a good major to have for sure, but be aware that to be a surgeon you are going to have to go to medical school. It is not possible, not to mention illegal, to practice medicine without a medical degree. In order to apply to medical school you are going to have to take the MCAT which is a standardized test used in the application process (it is equivalent to the MBA for business school and the LSAT for law school). Biology seems like a wise choice prior to applying to medical school, but it never hurts to ask your academic adviser/college counselor for some advice and tips. Your university should have a student resource center that you can go to for help and assistance. It is their job to answer your questions, provide you with information, lay out the options for you, and inform you of resources that you can use. They have a lot of experience in these kinds of things due to the number of students that they have helped.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!!

Best,

Austin
