Neil’s Answer

Dr. Chen is correct. It really depends upon demand. If you're willing to travel to where there is demand, you should have no problem finding a position as an orthodontist. I believe that none of the recent graduates from the IU orthodontics have had any problem finding positions.

Estelle’s Answer

The need for orthodontists is high already and is only growing. You may find some competition in the job hunt in bigger cities, but overall, you would be in a very strong position to make a great living as an orthodontist.

That is a hard question to answer. Dentist demand goes up while economy is good, but at poor economy, you are more likely have a hard time finding a job. if you are a college student now, it would take at least 7 years before you become an orthodontist. Job demand situation may change in a couple of years. I live in California, where it may be difficult to find a job as a dentist especially in Bay Area and LA. If you are willing to go suburb then it could be ok. It may be more difficult to associate as an orthodontist since profession is very specialized, the owner may not need to hire you. Best to talk to local orthodontist where you may want to practice and ask for their input.
