Hello Karoline they absolutely do. You can find everything from tutoring services to assist you with homework, math services to give you tips and walk you through that tough problem you've been struggling with, writing services to proofread and check grammar and spelling, and speech services to assist and prep you with that upcoming speech you may have for class. I myself have used many of these services and they really do help. Especially being a STEM major I have gone to tutoring services for help with coding. Wishing you the best of luck

Hi Karoline! This is a great question! Yes they do! I always used the writing center and tutoring on campus; it is a tremendous help and part of your tuition. I struggle with writing because I can have run on sentences and grammatical errors, but the writing center at my university really helped me in perfecting my essays. In addition, I also used the tutoring service as well for certain courses, especially pre-calculus because I struggled a lot in math and being able to have support meant a lot. I also was a tutor myself and many students would make appointments to receive help in chemistry, biology, and psych. stats. I think these services are helpful and I would definitely recommend to use them if available.

Best of luck!
Thank you comment icon Great answer Yasemin and really nice of you to share your personal experience to answer Karoline's question. Jezreel’s Answer

Most definitely. I’ve gone to two university’s and they have programs you can sign up for for getting a tutor. Usually the writing center is on campus too, either around the same location your tutoring would be, or elsewhere. It’s a very helpful tool to get you through college if you’re struggling with any academic work. You can always find help on any college campus. Good luck!!

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Karoline:

This is a very good question; and thank you for asking. You've received some very good responses and I'd like to share a different perspective to your question.

Yes, there are on-campus services that you could take advantage of for writing essays, resumes and tutoring. But, do not overlook off-campus support and resources as well. I'd advise you to tap into your family members, friends and networks that could assist you (students). You never know where the level of your help and support could come from (speaking from experience).

Bottom line, don't just limit yourself to on-campus support; think virtually, locally and globally. With COVID-19 right now, you can't go on-campus to get support with writing essays, resumes, tutoring anyway. So open wide your window of opportunity.

I wish you much success on your journey.

~ Sheila

Sheila recommends the following next steps:

Research off-campus resources that could assist you with writing essays, resumes and provide tutoring services

I would say that many students take advantage of the on-campus tutoring programs and writing centers. I personally used my university's tutoring program for many of my stem based classes and found that they were very helpful and definitely increased my understanding of the material. While I have not used a writing center, many of my professors suggested using them if we were ever feeling stuck with a paper or needed a specific section reviewed. Overall, you may never use them but it would be helpful to know how to get involved in the programs if you should ever need to. I hope this was helpful!

Kyle’s Answer

Absolutely, most colleges and universities have writing and tutoring centers. These are great for assisting with specific assignments or learning skills. You often have to sign up for specific time frames for receiving the help. I really encourage students for using this and taking advantage every week and learning how to leverage.

Good luck!

Kiersten’s Answer

Not nearly enough people do! I worked at my school's writing center in college, and usually less than half of my time slots were filled. I found that a lot of my friends didn't even know it existed until I mentioned working there. Definitely look into whatever resources your school offers, because they're there for you, and they'll just go to waste if you don't take advantage of them.

Rene N.’s Answer

Good Afternoon! I would advise that students are utilizing tutorial programs and writing centers on most campuses. Both programs are a helpful resource in regards to completing assignments and obtain assistance. When I was in undergrad, I worked in the writing centers of various dorms and I was able to help students complete research as well as understand how to utilize some computer applications.

Rene N. recommends the following next steps:

Contact residence life to ask who is the point of contact for the writing centers and tutorial programs

Alison’s Answer

Hi Karoline, they're definitely good resources for any students! I used to be a writing tutor and would help students across all majors with their writing, including STEM. It usually doesn't matter if your tutor is a STEM major in order to help you--they can still offer advice on strengthening your writing and communicating clearly. So whether you're taking a general, writing-heavy class or writing for your major, you can still get help from a writing tutor.
