Jason’s Answer

Great question. I was a Ranger with the National Park Service and now with the US fish and Wildlife Service. With NPS I worked as the Volunteer Program Manager and with FWS as the Visitor Services Manager. My education was a degree in Outdoor Education with a concentration on Environmental Education. There are now many schools offering some form of Outdoor Education. There are many different types of Rangers and duties will vary between agencies. If you are looking to be an Interpretive Ranger focus on environmental sciences if looking to work at a nature park or history if you want to work at a historical site. Either track you will want an education that focuses on interpretive techniques. Other Rangers focus on law enforcement in which case a criminal justice degree would be appropriate. Other Rangers act as park management staff in which a degree in Business Admin may be appropriate. School is of course an important step but internships are just as important in this field. Look into the Student Conservation Association for internships with National Land Management Agencies. It is a great way to get experience in parks. Some internships offer Public Land Authority (PLA). This status will give you a leg up when applying for Federal jobs. Start looking into USAJobs.gov. All Federal Jobs must be posted here. Look at seasonal park ranger jobs that you can do over summer break while in college.
