Ken’s Answer

Major League Softball offers opportunities for those who excel in the sport; however, the career life is relatively short, so a person should prepare ahead of time with a back up career. A major part of your preparation should be getting to know yourself well enough to prepare for this career as you progress in the sport.

Getting to know yourself and how your personality traits relate to people involved in various career opportunities is very important in your decision making process. During my many years in Human Resources and College Recruiting, I ran across too many students who had skipped this very important step and ended up in a job situation which for which they were not well suited. Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. First you have to be properly fitted for the correct size, and then you need to try on and walk in the various shoe options to determine which is fits the best and is most comfortable for you to wear. Following are some important steps which I developed during my career which have been helpful to many .

Ken recommends the following next steps:

The first step is to take an interest and aptitude test and have it interpreted by your school counselor to see if you share the personality traits necessary to enter the field. You might want to do this again upon entry into college, as the interpretation might differ slightly due to the course offering of the school. However, do not wait until entering college, as the information from the test will help to determine the courses that you take in high school. Too many students, due to poor planning, end up paying for courses in college which they could have taken for free in high school.
Next, when you have the results of the testing, talk to the person at your high school and college who tracks and works with graduates to arrange to talk to, visit, and possibly shadow people doing what you think that you might want to do, so that you can get know what they are doing and how they got there. Locate and attend meetings of professional associations to which people who are doing what you think that you want to do belong, so that you can get their advice. These associations may offer or know of intern, coop, shadowing, and scholarship opportunities. These associations are the means whereby the professionals keep abreast of their career area following college and advance in their career. You can locate them by asking your school academic advisor, favorite teachers, and the reference librarian at your local library. Jason’s Answer

In addition to the outstanding response above, you may want to look into the growth of the sport itself to see at your age if this is something to set your goals toward. This can be achieved by looking into industry benchmarks- what is the average salary if one exists? Are the number of softball leagues among children growing or diminishing?
For example, if this was 20 years ago and you said the same about soccer these benchmarks would forecast a huge increase in interest.
Try looking at predictors for the industry.

Hello Alexis,

Could Major League Softball be a Blossoming Career Avenue?

Major League Softball, also recognized as National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), is a professional softball league in the United States, composed of six teams. Established in 1997, the league has been dedicated to creating opportunities for top-tier softball players to compete professionally. To gauge if Major League Softball is a burgeoning career path, we need to evaluate various aspects such as the league's expansion, player salaries, viewership, sponsorships, and overall popularity.

The Rise of Major League Softball:

Expansion: At present, Major League Softball has six teams, but there are ongoing talks about broadening the league to incorporate more teams. Expansion can signal growth and an increase in opportunities for players to carve a career in professional softball.
Player Salaries: The remuneration of professional softball players has seen a steady rise over the years, mirroring a growing interest and investment in the sport. Higher salaries can lure more skilled athletes to consider a career in Major League Softball.
Viewership and Attendance: The audience for Major League Softball games, both on-site and via broadcasts, is a vital measure of the sport's popularity. Rising viewership and attendance can result in more exposure for players and potential growth opportunities for the league.
Sponsorships and Partnerships: Forming sponsorships and partnerships with leading brands can ensure financial stability for the league and its teams. An increasing number of sponsors and partners can point to a positive trajectory for Major League Softball as a career path.

Obstacles for Major League Softball:

Limited Exposure: One of the hurdles Major League Softball faces is limited exposure compared to other professional sports leagues. Enhanced marketing efforts and media coverage could help boost awareness and attract more fans to the sport.
Resource Allocation: Effectively distributing resources to support player development, facilities, and marketing initiatives is vital for the long-term growth of Major League Softball.
Competition from Other Sports: Softball vies with several other popular sports for attention and resources. Making a mark in a crowded sports landscape can be challenging but crucial for continued growth.

Conclusion: While Major League Softball has demonstrated signs of growth in recent years, there are still obstacles that need to be tackled to further solidify it as a rewarding career path for elite athletes. Expansion possibilities, rising player salaries, expanding viewership, securing sponsorships, and overcoming hurdles such as limited exposure and competition from other sports are key elements that will shape the future course of Major League Softball as a career path.
