Richard’s Answer

Hi Jessica, there are really very few degrees that would limit an ambition to get into publishing. It really depends on what you want to do. I have worked for a publishing company for over 20 years and I was an accounting major and work in my company's finance department. Besides the activities commonly associated with publishing such as editing, composition, proof-reading, etc, there are also many opportunities in IT, Supply Chain, Finance, Sales and Marketing that are equally important and have specializations unique to the publishing industry.

Furthermore, there are all types of publishing houses with all types of concentrations and expertise. For example, publishing in the space of fiction (adult or children focused) may require a different background or expertise than publishing non-fiction, technical, training or educational products. It really does depend on what passions you have.
