I don’t know if it’s a requirement to have a college degree to be an event planner but for this type of industry, good references and experience would be just as important.
Many if not all of the event planning companies we work with come via word of mouth or past great experiences so although having a college degree is a wonderful addition to anyone’s resume I don’t believe it would be a requirement to do what you are passionate about. Best of luck!

One great way to find out what it takes to be an event planner is to work for one! You could also reach out to event planners in your area and ask for informational interviews. Ask them why they went into the field and what skills are required to be successful. Good luck?
