What sort of insight or recommendation would you give a student looking at having a job in the artistic world as an art director or even a teacher?

I enjoy art to a great extent but a lot of people warn me about getting a job in the art world and I want to know if all of these warnings (it's hard to succeed) are applicable to all positions in the art world or more so to specific areas.

Hi Gabby,

Great question! I personally experienced these warming signs up into my college years. I heard them from my friends, parents, family members, and even adults I looked up too. They told me that art wouldn't get me anywhere or pay me anything. There is one thing I noticed about those people who warned me, they have little or no understanding of art. Don't let that defer you. The art/design world is evolving, especially with the technology world and creative minds now are needed more and more.

Also, every time someone told me getting into art is a bad idea, I used that as fuel to prove them wrong. Now when I look back, I'm glad I didn't listen to them, because now I work with an amazing company and get paid to do what I love. Good luck!

Thank you comment icon Thank you! I've been thinking about the same thing about using it as fuel. Your insight has been really helpful and I greatly appreciate it! Gabby
Thank you comment icon Anytime! I'm glad I was able to help. My husband is in the sound/movie industry. For the longest time, everyone told him music wouldn't get him anywhere. Now I see his name in movie credits. We always talk about how we use the negative and turn it into the positive. :) Vivian Urata

Teaching art is not the same thing as being a full time studio artist, but it is very satisfying work. I feel like I have been able to help people (kids and adults) discover their own creative outlet. In my opinion, everyone benefits from experiencing true creative expression. And, making art helps students with critical thinking, problem solving and cooperative learning. I find that being around learners keeps me excited about my own learning and art-making.

It is possible to show and sell art while teaching, but in my experience, it is not always easy. On the otherhand, while you are teaching you get to experiment with different media.

There are also many opportunities for art education outside of clasroom teaching. Museums, civic organizations, public lubraries, hospitals and other institutions employ art educators.

I beleive you are on the right track!
