What is the daily work life for an environmental engineer?
I have been passionate about the environment since around fourth grade and I want to make a career out of it. I want to make a difference in the world. An environmental engineer seems like the only hands on type of job in this field that I could research, so a little background of what it's like would be very useful when declaring my major. #engineering #environmental-engineering #environmentalism

I found my daily work as an environmental engineer to be very worthwhile. I worked in this field from 1972 to 2007, as a staff engineer and manager for several different companies. My daily efforts were normally directed on several different projects. In the course of a day, I might be preparing a description of air or water discharges from an industrial process in order to obtain a state or local environmental permit. I also might respond to a community complaint about air fallout or an agency complaint of noncompliance with discharge standards, which required that I obtain and review our recent processing and monitoring data. I would also typically be monitoring operating areas that could be environmental problems to verify that the in-place control procedures were being utilized. The equivalent of several days might be spent in reporting discharges to comply with agency requirements. Typically, I would also be training hourly workers and managers as well as to what they must do to help the company comply .The challenges were sometimes routine, sometimes difficult, but I could use my training and experience to solve the problems. I also had the daily reward that I was protecting the community and protecting the jobs of my fellow employees by ensuring that the company was complying with environmental standards.
