Ken’s Answer

Find your local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) hall and talk to them about their apprentice programs. The IBEW supplies electricians for different types of work from low voltage (computer network) to supply lines (lineman work). They will be able to provide you with information on their programs which allow you to be paid while you learn the trade. Some halls also have programs for high school students to learn about the trade as well.

Valerie’s Answer

Hi Lane,
If you want to become an electrician you do not have to go to college for that. Your daily job would include inside and outside work as an electrician. You will make sure all electrical appliances and lights are working properly in homes and factories. Depending on your job you may plan electrical systems, install wires, lights and control systems. You will provide maintenance checks to make sure all systems are in good working order as well. I suggest shadowing or working with an electrician to see if you like the work that they do. There are lots of jobs that get to work outside, so it is good to explore many options.
Best of luck.
