Coming into college, I had no idea what I wanted to do! I was good in all subjects of school so that didn't give me any indication of what to go into and I felt a bit overwhelmed by choices. To me business seemed broad enough where I could use my entire skillset and decide over time how to specify what area of business I wanted my career to be in. It just so happened my intro accounting professor pulled me aside one day and encouraged me to pursue a career as she saw that it came quite naturally to me. And so here I am years later a CPA!
Life could have been VERY different though. A marketing career would have been completely different as would a career finance. All are still respected, practical and mostly profitable professions which was important to me.
So if you aren't clear on what exactly you want coming into university business can be a good idea. Most colleges have a core business curriculum requiring you to take a variety of classes across all business disciplines. You'll soon learn which areas of business are for you or not and then you can use that to narrow down your career path.
Hope this helps!

I think that there are many upsides if you are thinking about going into business. However, I think that the main reason you should pursue a career in business is because you are passionate about this career, and want to make a difference in the business world. There are many external reasons as well, but the best and most important reason for you to go into a career in business is because it is something that you want to do!

Business is a very broad category that applies to many professions. Every industry has a need for people with business acumen, whether you're specializing in finance, accounting, marketing, operational management, etc. In my opinion, if you enjoy business and/or math, it is an excellent college major because it has the potential to open up many doors for you. With that being said, my personal opinion is to major in something specific (ie. finance, accounting) because it will give you a defined skill. You can always pivot into more broad business roles but it is harder to do the reverse, that being completing a major in something like business administration and then trying to secure a job in finance or accounting. Take your first couple of semesters to seek out as much advice as you can and use your introductory business courses to give you an idea of what specialty concentration within business you're most interested in. Good luck, Brianna!

Being in business will allow you to work in an industry that excites you and it may even open your eyes to new industries that you didn't even know existed. When I started my career in public accounting, I was assigned a client in the Aerospace & Defense industry. This is an industry that I had never thought much about previously. Now, it is an industry that I am very passionate about!
Business can take your career in a million different directions if you let it :)
Best of luck!
