How exactly are scholarship monies put towards tuition and can they be limited to certain careers even it is a major or minor?

I wanted to understand that once scholarship monies are granted, the discretion of spending is now at the students disposal. However a fellow classmate was unable to scholarship money towards their major in business. How can I avoid the same problem. #major #scholarship

Hi Hayley - First off, if you are able to obtain a scholarship, that is so awesome and a great way to start your secondary education in a financially smart way! First, I want to make sure you are aware that every scholarship is different in how it is provided to the student. While it may seem like money is simply transferred to the student, at times there can be other ways of providing funds. Some scholarships request that the money be sent directly to the school you are attending. The best thing you can do it ask lots of questions upfront and read as much information as possible about the scholarship before you decide to apply. Since the organization providing the funds owns the money, they get to make the decisions about how it is used. So do your research!

While you are applying for scholarships, it is also important to get in touch with your college or university's Financial Aid office. They can help you determine how your scholarships can be applied whether it's just to tuition, or just to housing, etc. Sometimes this depends on the type of scholarship, but they should be able help provide general guidance of how they would be handled. Also, each specific major/degree might have it's own Financial Aid office. You will want to be in touch with them as well to learn if there are any other additional requirements.
