Diana’s Answer

Hello Coutrney, I am Diana Sheedy.
I've been a Hairdresser for 29 years.
I started out a shampoo girl in High School, went to Beauty School, worked as a Stylist, Assistant Manager, Manager then went into business for myself.

My advise is to always be learning, listening and have an impeccable work ethic with great customer service and organizational skills! That is what it takes to be successful! It was REALLY CHALLENGING to keep great stylist working for you, they are the ones that start their own buisness'. It felt more like babysitting , therefore I decided to work for myself.

I never realized how hard it was to EVERYTHING myself. I used to have a receptionist, fixed schedule , vacations without it costing money ( paying rent while not working) and an employer to pay part of my Social Security Taxes! However it was such a successful business, I couldn't possibly take all the customers that wanted to come to me. I never advertised, word if mouth was my best advertisement( very inexpensive).
I was able to set my own schedule, have holidays off, use the products I wanted ect..
Lots of advantages to owning your own Salon. I would start from the ground up , working at a salon for a couple years to build a clientele, learning a bit of accounting helps too.

I LOVE MY JOB! I moved away from home and my clientele turned into my family! I am blessed to be in a business where you have such a personal connection with people, the ability to make someone feel and look amazing when they walk out my door!

I wish you great success!
