If you are new to the gallery industry, I strongly recommend you to start as an internship in some local art gallery to understand the operation of the art galleries first. Through there, you can start to learn a lot of skills to hold to prepare an art exhibition. Also you can think about what kind of artwork you want to sell in your art gallery. Which form of art do you want to showcase and sell? such as painting to sculptors, decorative pieces, pottery, etc. Secondly, it is about the price range of the art pieces, which kind of art pieces are more suitable for your customers in the neighbourhood, or more popular in the modern art market. Last but not least, building up network that is beneficial to starting up your gallery. It is not something that can be done alone.

An internship is definitely the place to start. An education in art history or museum studies would be very useful. Internships are often advertised on gallery websites. The New York Foundation for the Arts has relevant classifieds: https://www.nyfa.org/classifieds/

Ariel M.’s Answer

Hi Sheyenne, starting a modern art gallery is like starting any other business. You'll need a loan, a business plan and some knowledge about the industry you will be working in. If you are still a student, I would look into getting internships or jobs at art galleries and auction houses so you can see how the business of art works and start building your network. You may want to take some art history classes or major in art history in college.
