What should I major in if I want to get a career in aviation?

I'm 16 and currently deciding what college I want to go to and what I want to major in, and I have a strong interest in aviation but I can't find a major that would lead me to a career in it. #college #school #major #aviation #pilot #academics

Karey’s Answer

Aviation maintenance, professional aeronautics, aerospace engineering, flight safety, human factors, airport management or fly drones or be a pilot! There are a bunch of professions.

Thank you comment icon Thanks for the response! Are there any good schools that you know of that offers these? Martin
Thank you comment icon Hi Martin. Finding a college that provides one of the majors Karey is talking about is a pretty location-specific activity. If you have a specific list of majors, you can start looking around in your local area. Basically, CareerVillage might not be the best place to find a specific college to apply to :/ Jared Chung, Admin
Thank you comment icon I will be attending an aviation school next year for college! I know the best in the country are: Purdue, Western Michigan, University of North Dakota and Embry Riddle Joshua
Thank you comment icon Congrats Josua! Having attended one of the afore mentioned school, I can attest to the fact that they are good and expensive schools. There are also a number of smaller, less expensive schools. While you can get a degree in Aviation Management or Aviation Technology, you might consider getting a degree in something else so that you have a plan B to fall back on when the aviation industry falters. Greg Marion
Thank you comment icon All of the schools mentioned above are great aviation schools. I attended two aviation schools myself before joining the USAF. I would recommend any of the schools mentioned above. It's not required to have a degree in aviation to fly as a professional pilot however. You can obtain your flying education from a number of professional flight schools before, during, or after attending college. I would be happy to talk to more specifics if you have questions. Richard’s Answer

There are many major and minor US universities that offer degrees in all aspects of aviation. Just to name a few, Purdue, Ohio State, Embry-Riddle as well as some lesser known such as Louisiana Tech, North Dakota University and many more not named here.
Depending on what aspect of the industry you decide to study, there are quality programs, both traditional and online, that provide the technical and foundational skills necessary to become an aviation professional.

Julie’s Answer

It depends on what part of aviation interests you, but I have a liberal arts degree (Social Sciences) from a public university . There are dozens of non-technical careers in aviation, from HR and sales to marketing and catering. Unless you specifically want to be a pilot or aircraft engineer, for example, I'd suggest that you pursue a degree in something you're passionate about and develop an aviation career from there.
