What are some possible future careers?

Hi, I am currently a sophomore in high school. I have been wondering why everyone always talks about the jobs of the future and that they need to prepare us for these jobs. I was just wondering what would be a possible job in the future because I have no idea what jobs would be valued more in the future. Responses are greatly appreciated. #career #future

Simeon’s Answer

Coding and web-design skills will continue to be in high demand. As more industries do business on the web, even small knowledge gains in tech will be incredibly useful. For software related skills, I'd recommend keeping an eye on SkillShare. It's a website for learning skills from high quality video courses that you can watch at your own pace. They have a lot of discounts and deals, so keep an eye out for those.

Hi Forrest. There's a great organization working on identifying where demand for employees will be in the future. They're called Jobs For The Future and they say that engineering and computer science should be highly-demanded skills that employers will want to see in the future. Here's a link to their website: http://www.jff.org/blog/2014/02/24/reimagining-career-and-technical-education

But those aren't the only possible future careers. There are all kinds of changes taking place in the business world, and they'll open up new possibilities. For example, you could look at the huge changes taking place in genomics and decide that getting into biology might be an attractive career path.

Thank you comment icon Thanks for the advice. Forrest

Dear Forrest,

Exploring Potential Career Paths

It's commendable that you, as a high school sophomore, are already contemplating your career prospects and the necessary preparation. The job landscape is always in flux, influenced by technological progress, societal transformations, and economic fluctuations. Although we can't definitively foresee which jobs will be most sought after in the future, we can identify certain trends and burgeoning sectors worth your attention.

1. Specialist in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: As technology gallops ahead, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are gaining crucial importance across diverse sectors. Careers in this domain encompass algorithm development, data analysis, and intelligent system creation. High-demand roles in the future may include AI engineer, data scientist, and machine learning specialist.

2. Renewable Energy Expert: As global attention shifts towards sustainability and climate change mitigation, renewable energy careers are set to flourish. This field offers roles like solar energy technician, wind turbine engineer, and sustainable energy consultant. As we transition to cleaner energy sources, renewable energy experts will be in high demand.

3. Healthcare Technology Professional: The healthcare sector is leveraging technology to enhance patient care, streamline operations, and boost efficiency. Careers that merge healthcare and technology, such as health informatics specialist, telemedicine provider, and medical software developer, are predicted to be in demand. These roles necessitate a combination of healthcare knowledge and tech skills.

4. Cybersecurity Specialist: With cyber threats and data breaches becoming increasingly common, cybersecurity is a critical focus for organizations across all sectors. Careers in this field involve safeguarding systems, networks, and data from cyber attacks. Roles like cybersecurity analyst, ethical hacker, and information security manager are expected to grow in the future.

5. Developer in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): Industries like entertainment, education, healthcare, and marketing are exploring the possibilities of VR and AR technologies. Careers in VR and AR development involve creating immersive experiences, applications, and simulations. Professionals skilled in VR/AR development will find opportunities across various sectors.

6. Environmental Sustainability Coordinator: As companies aim to be more environmentally friendly and reduce their carbon footprint, environmental sustainability managers are becoming increasingly important. These professionals focus on implementing sustainable practices, reducing waste, and ensuring environmental regulation compliance. Careers in environmental sustainability offer the chance to positively impact the planet.

7. Data Privacy Officer: Amid growing concerns about data privacy and protection, organizations are prioritizing compliance with data privacy regulations. Data privacy officers ensure that companies handle personal data ethically and securely, developing policies, conducting audits, and managing data breaches.

In summary, while it's difficult to pinpoint the exact jobs that will be most valued in the future, considering emerging fields like artificial intelligence, renewable energy, healthcare technology, cybersecurity, VR/AR development, environmental sustainability, and data privacy can offer insights into potential high-demand career paths.
