Margaret’s Answer

Economics is a great major because the career options are vast and have great variety. With an economics degree, you can be a teacher, an author, a financial advisor, a stock trader, etc. I majored in economics and am now a compliance analyst for an international bank. Choosing a career that stems from an economics degree ultimately depends on what you want to do and what career field interests you. Research economic-based careers and read about what they entail.

Mikela’s Answer

Hi Zarah, great question! My name is Mikela and I majored in economics at Georgetown University. I graduated in May 2014 and went to work at PwC, an accounting firm, as a transfer pricing consultant. You can go MANY different directions with an economics degree. I decided to do consulting, but I had other friends who went to work in finance and banking. You could also go into research or academia. Majoring in economics opens up a lot of different doors when you graduate from college. If you're already in college or are planning to go to college, I would recommend looking at the website of the college you're interested in and seeing what types of jobs the alumni of the different majors have. This is information the office of admissions and/or economics department can provide you with. Hope this helps and keep up the great work!

Chris’s Answer

I majored in Economics and when I left university I really didn't know what I wanted to do! I started as a Demand Forecaster, and moved into Material Purchasing, Production Scheduling, and Capacity Planning. I built a strong Supply Chain career base with a broad set of skills before moving into team leadership and managerial/directors roles. I have worked in varying industries from jewelry, chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and engineering.

So to answer the question.......... Economics is a great major. It is a great topic to study and understand (not just for a career, but for your personal life too!), and employers see it as a tough degree which demonstrates your ability to learn and develop yourself. It is broad enough to open up different career paths and many industry segments.

Richard’s Answer

My son studied economics and has received job offers in consulting/investment banking so I will answer from the perspective of his advice.

Economics opens up an extremely broad array of careers. Naturally economists, also corporate strategy, marketing, data science (from a rigorous and quantitative program anyway), finance and consulting of course.

Once you narrow down your interests, you can tune them with niche skills! For grad school/data science, programming! For finance/consulting, news/strategy books!
