Hi, Hattie!
I am not a nurse, I am accountant, but my son came 7 weeks early and I can say with 100% certainty that those amazing NICU nurses made me consider going back to school to re-start my career as a NICU nurse.
I've heard those positions are very competitive, and it makes sense, because those nurses are the cream of the crop. They are absolute angels on this earth.
If you can handle high stress (not 100% of the time probably, but some babies have BIG BIG needs), 12 hour nursing shift rotations, and if you have a BIG BIG heart for premature babies, I say go for it! I can't think of a more rewarding job to have after being a NICU parent. Those nurses saved my son's life, kept him strong, and now he's a thriving little boy. I have so much admiration for them and the work they do.
I do think I've heard it takes some time to work your way up to the NICU roles and that if you want an easier going hospital, you might have to spend some time in the higher acuity children's hospital NICUs where things are probably more challenging/tougher cases than at a lower level NICU. If you have a passion for helping others, want to be in the nursing field, and have a big heart, this is the job for you!!!

I may not be a NICU nurse, but when my first little one (a baby girl) arrived, she spent around two weeks in the NICU. During that time, we were lucky to have the help of many amazing NICU nurses. My daughter had some trouble breathing by herself, which is why she needed to be in the NICU. The NICU nurses took on the role of primary caregivers for my baby girl, while doctors checked in now and then during their rounds. They lovingly cared for and watched over my daughter, handling everything from feedings, baths, and diaper changes to giving her medicine and running tests.
As first-time parents, we couldn't be more grateful for these nurses, who showed us how to look after our baby girl. They guided us through diaper changes, feedings, and taught us what signs to watch for concerning her health. These nurses were not only smart and knowledgeable, but also patient and kind. I believe that being a NICU nurse is a fantastic career for those who want to make a difference in people's lives and have a soft spot for babies and new parents.
