Melissa’s Answer
The short answer is: extremely busy.
Hospital nursing is caring for individuals who cannot care for themselves in some capacity for 12 hours at a time. Newborns cannot care for themselves at all, so NICU babies need constant nursing care. All patients in the hospital need 24 hour care, and the shifts are split between the day and night shifts (7am-7pm and 7pm-7am).
Deciding what to do in the hours of your life that you will be at work is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.
Most people would consider themselves busy at work! Deciding what kind of busy to be....that is the question!
If you decide nursing is for you, be the best nurse out there! Your patients deserve it!
All the best to you,
Melissa

I will also add, not only are you busy caring for the tiniest of people, you are also dealing with their extremely emotional families too! I speak from experience of having a child born at 26 weeks. (my background is Adult CVICU=Didn't know anything about the NICU).... Praise the Lord, we had mostly amazing nurses, and given the advise of one of our primary nurses, we transferred to another Childrens hospital that specialized in what my son had...= My son is a perfectly normal 8 year old, you would never guess he was a 2lb baby, with 200 NICU days in his past!
