Benefits of being a respiratory therapist are the variety of patients you get to work with, going from a delivering therapy to a newborn to holding the hand of a dying patient, learning about all the body systems (cardiac and pulmonary are effected by all our other systems)!
Being the eyes and ears of a small hospital and my favorite; the feeling you get when you walk into a stressful situation and people relax because ‘respiratory is here’!

It's a very rewarding career. And there are so many ways you can help others. You can help neonates to geriatric patients. The pay versus what you do and how much education (associates degree) is needed is very good. If you enjoy people, enjoy medicine, especially the heart and lungs, the benefits are beyond measure.

Honestly I think that it’s one of the best jobs in healthcare because usually when nurses call emergencies we’re always there and people can breathe a little easier lol. No but seriously, I have personally reversed so many incidents where the team just has no idea what to do. How to help the patients work of breathing and get the patient the right treatment like oxygen therapy, Non invasive ventilation, high flow therapy or mechanical ventilation and help intubate the patient with an artificial airway. The magic of it all is you’re usually there for the emergency fix the problem and you can step away within a few minutes and move on to you’re next task or we have plenty of downtime within our own department with no patients in there just equipment, supplies, and usually a break room.

In short, care of the patients and continuous learning. As a member of a healthcare team, a respiratory therapist has the unique position to promote real change in patients. Advocating for a patients cardiopulmonary status, treatments, and care-plan is some of the true benefits to be beheld. These remarkable influences will then ultimately prevail in patients quality of care, and prognosis in their disease.

I love being able to actively mentor, study, and learn from RT's, as well as work under the guidance of providers. Knowing that each patient will present a different challenge, and desire for quality healthcare makes it incredibly rewarding to assist in those objectives.

Also, in recent weeks, the end of October signified a week dedicated to respiratory care professionals. During those times, addressing the profession, and yourself as a healthcare professional will make an extremely advantageous career rewarding.
