Estelle’s Answer
Hi, Ally,
I am a gynecologic surgeon. After 4 years of medical school, Ob/Gyn doctors complete a 4 year residency in obstetrics and gynecology. During those 4 years, they are required to perform a set number of procedures. After residency, gynecologists are prepared to perform all the basic surgeries for our field; however, surgeons continue to learn new skills and newer advanced procedures. I attend conferences and surgery labs periodically to learn better techniques as instruments become better as well.

After completing an undergraduate degree the next step is medical school ,which is typically 4 years. Most doctors then do a one year internship followed by 4 years of residency in surgery. Some doctors then chose to do an additional year or two of a fellowship to gain some additional training. What residency you do determines if you are going to be a general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, OB/GYN surgeon etc.
