Hi there.
technically you do not need schooling to become a dental assistant. I'm in NY and I went to the Dental school, obtained my national certification and state license for a DA. All it got me was more knowledge and a pretty certificate. I'm still state certified but did not renew my DANB which is the national boards certificate. It does help you get a higher paying job since you are trained so that was an advantage for me. Currently I am a surgical assistant so my patients are under sedation. It helped that I went to school because the instruments are different and with sedation patients you have to know what to look for when they have all the monitors on them. I would suggest asking to shadow an office for the day. So many dental practices would love to have an extra hand. you can see the instruments, see the procedures and also see if you can handle blood. Oral surgery has the most but with fillings, root canals and crowns , there still is blood here and there and you might find out you don't like it. Good Luck!

Hello Nichole!

There are two routes you can take in order to become a dental assistant, you can attend to a community college that offers a dental assistant certification and classes which usually takes about two years. Other you can attend a dental school trade school (made sure it is approved by the dental board in your state) and that takes about a few months depending if you want to be a register dental assistant or just a regular dental assistant .
