Sara, the medical field varies greatly when it comes to this. Due to the fact that illness does not have regular hours, there is a possibility that you are working long hours. But please keep in mind how rewarding this will be! You are making babies feel better!
If you go into private practice, you might have the most control over your hours. My son’s pediatrician work Monday - Thursday. Twice a week 10-6 and twice a week 7-4. Now I’m sure there is some works before and after but also something due on Fridays.
If you work at a hospital then these hours could be extremely extended. Especially in the emergency room. It’s not uncommon to work 3-4 days 12 hour shifts but then have 3-5 days off. So there are many ways this could play.
The pay involved can also vary greatly. For the most the pay is generous but it’s all relative. You would, more than likely, have some student loans that need to be addressed.
However, very few careers offer this level of fulfillment. You have chosen a great field. I know my son loves when the pediatrician makes him feel better!

Hi Sara,
A pediatrician typically works around 50 hours per week. They normally work 5-6 days per week including Saturdays.
Hope this helps!

Hi Sara,
I am not a pediatrician, but I work as an occupational therapy assistant at a pediatric therapy clinic. Hours with this population largely revolve around school. During the summer, I tend to work 4, 10-hour days (8am-6pm). During the school year, I work 3, 10-hour days and 2, 5-hour days. After school appointments are most sought after, so later availability is important in my industry.
However, with therapy, these are regular weekly appointments. For a pediatrician, they’re more one-time appointments where kiddos can probably miss school. It all depends on the nature of the job you choose with the pediatric population!
