Very rewarding to work with children. I work in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, so at times it can be very stressful. However, it is awesome to be able to really help kids and their families in the time of need.

Hi, Sara!
In my opinion, being a pediatrician is great because you get to positively influence kids and their parents with valuable preventive care and healthy lifestyle recommendations. You have the opportunity to diagnose illnesses when people are young so that they have fewer long term problems. Pediatricians are often viewed as important parts of kids' lives in general, and people confide in their doctors. This is quite an honor.
Disadvantages: You can make great recommendations, but the patient and parents are the ones ultimately responsible for carrying out the recommendations, and sometimes it is frustrating when positive efforts are not made.
Sometimes you will come across very distressing situations such as child abuse and serious illness, and you will need to handle those serious problems carefully to protect kids.

Hi Dr. Archer: Your comments are very insightful and on point. My son is a Pediatrician and in his first year in a fellowship program. Thanks for sharing.
