How has nursing changed you?

I am considering a career in nursing (thinking about pediatric nursing) and I want to assess the impact nursing will have on me. I've heard some horror stories about high turnover rates among nurses, yet I know I want to help people. How can I know that this is the correct career choice for me? #nursing #registered-nurses #pediatric-nursing

Nursing is both a wonderful and rewarding field, but it's also very hard and taxing at times. Compared to when I was a new nurse I was definitely innocent to the realities of how callous you can become in the field. With that in mind, my heart is still big and wanting to give to those in need despite the horror stories. Definitely shadow/volunteer at a hospital/clinic/nursing home anywhere nurses work so you can have many different perspectives. Plus, my experiences all come from bedside (hospital) nursing so my experiences will be very different from those who may work outside of the hospital. Best of luck! nursing nursinglife volunteer

Richard W’s Answer

High turnover rates are a reflection of employers who haven't planned well or don't recognize/reward their staff. It's rare to find a former nurse, compared to a former something else, which means that nurses may change employers frequently, but they stay in the profession, and in that sense turnover is low.

Lirio’s Answer

Nursing can profoundly change you in many positive ways. It often enhances your empathy and understanding of others, as you regularly interact with patients facing challenging situations. You’ll develop strong communication skills and learn how to advocate for those who may not be able to speak up for themselves.

While the challenges, like high turnover rates and emotional stress, are real, many nurses find deep fulfillment in making a difference in people's lives. To determine if nursing is the right choice for you, consider volunteering or shadowing a nurse in a pediatric setting. This firsthand experience will give you a better sense of the daily realities of the job.

Reflect on your passion for helping others and your resilience in stressful situations. If you feel a strong connection to the idea of caring for children and supporting their families, that’s a good sign you’re on the right path. Remember, every career has its challenges, but if you’re driven by a desire to help, nursing can be incredibly rewarding.
