Both are great occupations, but being a neurosurgeon takes many more years of training and is much more stressful. They do, however, make significantly higher income than the vast majority of registered nurses. As far as the training goes, getting an RN takes 2-4 yrs. Becoming a neurosurgeon takes about 15 years.
RN you can do either:
2 year Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN)
or
4 years for your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Either Degree you will have to take the NCLEX-RN exam (you take this exam after you graduate)
Neurosurgeon:
4 years college
4 years medical school
7 years neurosurgery residency.

Hi Aerion,
To become a neurosurgeon - it typically takes about 14-15 years after graduating high school (4 years of undergraduate, 4 years of medical school, 6 to 7 years of residency)
To become a RN - it typically takes 2-4 years after graduating high school (depending on the pathway you choose)
I'm happy to answer any additional follow up questions that you may have.
