Hello Owen. I agree with Ken's recommendation concerning the IBEW. An apprenticeship is a great way to learn and develop skills after high school and grow into a career. I came found an article about the electrician trade that may be useful to you. It is an interview with an electrician regarding his experience.

In addition to the technical and physical skills you will need, I recommend developing skills in algebra, writing, negotiation. I believe you also need adaptation and people skills. You need to be able to present and sell your skill set. Having a continual desire to learn is important too. Keeping up with technological advances crucial to the field will provide a measure of job security.

Juan recommends the following next steps:

Contact an electrician in your area and ask if you can interview them

Ken’s Answer

Owen- I would recommend finding your local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) hall and talking to them about the requirements to enter their apprentice program. This will give you a good understanding of the classes you can take to help in your pursuit of becoming an electrician. In addition, they may have some opportunities for you to shadow an electrician to learn more about the trade and help in deciding if this is the direction you want to go. The apprentice program allows you to learn the trade while earning an income.
