Hi Janel,

Being a baker sounds wonderful! It is certainly a career where you can make everyone happy! I would recommend finishing high school and then seeking out a technical or culinary school. You could start researching those schools now. Bakers must be trained not only in all the baking basics but also food safety, nutrition and math. You could also start by Googling about baking; there are so many things a baker can make; cakes, pies, pastries, cookies and so much more.

You could also seek out a part-time job at a local bakery and learn on-the-job. If a part-time job doesn't fit into your schedule, consider interviewing some local bakers in your community. To prepare, think of some questions ahead of time and write them down so you are organized and able to learn as much as you can. Maybe you are already baking at home? There are so many things you can try at home; check out You Tube for "how to" or "tutorial" videos or search for recipes on Pinterest or Google. You can also check out some of the shows on tv on the Food Channel. There are many baking shows and you can learn a lot from watching them.

Baker jobs may be available at bakeries (of course), commercial bakeries (manufacturing facilities) but also at grocery stores, club stores and restaurants. The work hours may begin very early and include working on weekends and holidays.

I wish you much luck. If you are a baker, you can work anywhere in the world!

A career in hospitality / food and beverage is an awesome goal! I would start by applying for jobs at local bakeries, most towns have dozens of bakers that would love to have young talent! Consider this a hobby as well! Can you bake for friends or family? Flaunt your baking on social media, practice - practice - practice!! Most importantly, never stop having fun!
