Each situation you get in prepares you for the next. Hopefully you will have some mild to moderate situations before having to deal with the complex ones!
In law enforcement, you rely on your training to get you through. In the scarier situations, much of what happens is automatic reflex, as you do not have time to think it through and weigh your options! But, I also learned that in some of those situations, it was best to stay calm, pretend I didn't know the person I was talking to was wanted on a felony warrant, and wait for backup to arrive. There's nothing to be gained by trying to make the arrest by myself as long as I could keep up the small talk!
You will quickly gain the self-confidence to carry you through, so, while it might seem now that you couldn't possibly do those things, you will be amazed at the transformation that takes place as you go through your training!

I have been in many tough situations. Police, I have never had a bad experience with the police but obviously others do. I would recommend not to respond negatively and just follow directions. Don't let emotions steer your actions, just stay calm and pursue remedies to correct the situation later. Professionally, I had a serious blow to my career about eight years ago and I worried that I would not be able to rebound. I rebounded but it was tough. People who are successful take risks and have pitfalls. I have learned that what is in front of you is not as important as you think. Finally, people get upset sometimes after interviewing. I don’t ever react to bad behavior. Maybe that should be my theme for all three subject areas. Reacting to bad behavior only makes things worse. You will not be able to avoid tough situations, but you are in control of how you react. Remember you will get to the other side.

I think everyone gets into tough situations. It is how you react to them that will help you grow as a person. If you look at it as a challenge instead of a personal attack, it will be much easier to move forward. I got laid off, but used it as an opportunity to find a new job closer to my house with less travel. Within my job, I run into tough situations all the time - unreasonable deadlines, people I don't get along with, managers making decisions I don't agree with. Some you have to just have to deal with because you can't change them and do your best and others you can work with the people and give logical arguments to give your opinion and people do listen.
