Dr. Aditi’s Answer

Dental school is different than medical school. However, dentists who want to do specialization in oral and maxillofacial surgery need to complete a medical school training for 4-5 years after completing their dental school. Dentistry is a very good profession. In order to figure out if you like dentistry or not, you need to start shadowing under a dentist in private dental practice or community dental clinic. This will help you to know if you would like to do the same thing every day in your life. However, I would not say that dentistry is monotonous as every tooth you treat is different and every patient's case is different. Also, there are lot of branches in dentistry such as public health dentistry, restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, pedodontics, oral medicine, and oral surgery. Apart from clinical dentistry, you can also get involved into interdisciplinary branches where you can apply apply your knowledge of dentistry to other branches such as Data science, Artificial intelligence, Research, and many more. So there is nothing to worry about things getting monotonous.

Dr. Aditi recommends the following next steps:

Shadow/volunteer under a dentist in private practice or community dental clinic during high school or undergrad
Figure out what you like about these shadowing experiences. This can even help you to write a good personal statement.
Maintain good GPA, get involved in activities conducted by pre-dental groups, and talk with current students who are in dental school
Get involved in volunteer activities as this can help you to develop compassion for everyone.
Give your DAT exam and obtain good score

Allyn’s Answer

So Dental school is different than Medical school. However there are some Medical school graduates that do become Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons. If you want to become a dentist you need to look at the schools you will most likely apply to. Their website me will have a link for prospective students and I’m they will have a step by step guide on the classes to take to meet your prerequisites in college. Then it is recommended to shadow, maintain a high GPA and be an overall well rounded student with plenty of extracurricular activities.
