My hospital offers 8 hour shifts or 12 hour shifts. It also depends if you are part time or full time. Nurses do work holidays as well.
All of this is different if you work in a clinic setting.
Nursing has so many different options- 12 hour shifts, 8 hour shifts, per diem which is like an as needed position, clinic, research, teaching, management, surgery, etc. There are so many different areas to work it would be easy to find something that fits your life.
I work per diem, so I make my own schedule and work 5 days per pay period. It all depends on what you are looking for but as far as crazy, no I would not say that. Different every week? Yes.

Yes, it can be! In the hospital, new hires often have to work rotating schedules, which can be pretty rough. You may work 7a-7p Monday, Wednesday work 7p-7a, and then Friday 7a-7p again! It’s not the norm, but it definitely happens. My fiancé is a nurse as well, and he is usually scheduled for what I think is the best shift ever 11a-11p. But then he’ll pick up a day shift from 7a-7p and then a weekend night shift from 7p-7a or just an on-call shift overnight. So, yes, shift schedules can be fairly rough!

Kathryn, they are not so much crazy but long. Just about every nurse has a twelve hour shift they have to work. Most hospitals work a 2 3 split. You'll work Friday, Saturday and Sunday, off Monday and Tuesday, work Wednesday and Thursday, off Friday, Saturday and Sunday, work Monday, off Tuesday , Wednesday and Thursday and start it all over again. But usually they will schedule you to work Monday and Tuesday instead of having one day off. I'm know this sounds confusing but with a twelve hour shift it's the norm. Holidays are different also, for instance, if you work Thanks giving Day you should be off for Christmas then next year it changes. You would be off Thanksgiving Day and work Christmas, same for all the paid holidays off. I hope this gives you a better idea of a nurses schedule.
