I worked in schools for 25 years and was also a member of the board of a small private school. In most school districts you will need at least 5 years as a school teacher as well as an administrative certification to become a school principal. Such experience will help you see the role of a principal. As a teacher the school district might even help pay for the classes needed to get the school administrator certification. I think being a principal is a very difficult job. The best ones work 10 hours a day and some evenings. You have to observe and evaluate all the teachers in the building. You gave to manage staff and the budget that keeps the school running smoothly. You also gave to meet with upset parents. Depending on the size of the school you may also have to decide what to do with students who present dangers. You will also be the person who interacts with administrative staff and directors at the level of the district. Your week will be filled with meetings with all kinds of people. You will have deadlines and state laws to follow. Depending upon the size and wealth of the school district and your school you can make a very good salary. Remember that you will not have your summers free and you will be working long hours. Take it one step at a time. Become a teacher and see for yourself.

Yes. It is a hard thing. You have to be a good administrator. You should have good command over different administrative skills. You are responsible for the education of a such huge amount of people. You also need a good amount of money.
Hi Himanshu, could you expand on your answer a little bit more? I think the student is looking for more details about what it's like being a school principal, if the job is worth the education required, and what the typical salary is. Anything from your personal experience in this field would be great also! Thanks!

Hi Jay,
Being a principal is definitely worth it. But the job isn't for everyone. You have to be good at a lot of things and not just running a classroom or getting along well with kids. You have to be able to manage and run the entire school. Work well with the staff and students and be able to solve different problems. You are also, sometimes in charge of hiring and firing people who either fit/don't fit well with the other staff, students and your school in general. Being a principal is hard but it can also be very rewarding. The pay is pretty good too!
