Paul’s Answer

Participating in clubs or organizations is a great way to distinguish from other students but make sure you are an active participant. Listing a lot of organizations that you were a member of is fine but holding a leadership position is even better. If those are filled, lead a project or organize an event at your school or in your community.

Matthew’s Answer

It's important to have good grades, affiliations with multiple clubs/organizations, volunteering your time to a good cause and stay out of trouble. Having experiences likes international travel and speaking/ learning to speak other languages will also help your case.

Krasti’s Answer

Hi Emily,
Similar to most of the responses here, colleges look for someone who is active in clubs/organizations. The reason for that is because they want to see if you have soft skills such as leadership and time management skills. These are important skills that will help people succeed. Participating in clubs is a good way to demonstrate those skills. It shows that you use your extra time to voluntarily participate in a club that you could be passionate about. It shows what you use your free time to better improve yourself and helping others and that you're not spending it wastefully. This is especially true if you take on a leadership role, such as Treasurer or Secretary for a club. It also shows that you know how to manage your time well if you are getting good grades as well. Good luck!

Colleen’s Answer

Beyond good grades and test scores, colleges are looking for a well-rounded individual. Do you participate in sports or clubs at school? Highlight that. Especially if you have been consistent with something. I think colleges would rather see you be passionate about 1-3 things and grow into leadership positions or Varsity etc. in those clubs/teams than just be a member of 10+ organizations. Don't spread yourself too thin - it looks like you aren't actually committed to any one thing at all. Also, emphasizing a job you held outside of school or volunteer work is great. It shows you contribute to your community!

HI
Being involved in high school really helps. This shows you care about what is going on around you so join many clubs/organizations. Anything from community service hours and who write your letters of recommendation can help

Blake’s Answer

Hey Emily,

Good grades and test scores are great, but I think one thing that isn't mentioned often is volunteering! Helping your community is a great way to show character and compassion.

Thanks,
Blake
