Hello Mireya,

To get into the medical field, many students usually major in Biology and are in some sort of Pre-Med program, but for nursing specifically you essentially NEED to be in a nursing program. For more advanced and specific nursing careers such as neonatal nursing, you need to complete a Bachelor’s of Nursing and pass the Nursing Exam in your state to become a registered nurse where you will gain experience in emergency rooms, working with actual patients, and building up your resume and experience. While working at a hospital, you will want to try and gain any experience in a NICU (Neonatal intensive care unit) if possible. Finally, you will need to complete a Master’s program and possible PhD program to work in an NICU as a neonatal nurse.

Expected total time for completion: 6-8 years.
Next Steps: Look into schools that have Bachelor’s of Nursing programs and apply to multiple schools.

I hoped this help and good luck!

See Julio's answer above. I agree with what he wrote. Typically, Biology is the way to go, but you could also major in another science, like Chemistry. Try to nail down what type of medicine you are interested in and go from there. I had a Psychology major who is now in a premed program. You need to figure out what area of medicine you think you're interested in. In the meantime, Bio or Chem both work.
