Sylvia’s Answer

I work as an auditor in public accounting, which is a common path for people starting out as accountants. For this career path, I am getting a CPA certification.

Day to day my job has quite a bit of variety. I work on several different clients and work with my team to figure out what tasks are highest priority each day. We test our clients' financial statements and verify that they are appropriately stated. Before we switched to working remotely during the pandemic, we would work at each different client's office, meaning that day to day I might also be working in a different location. My job is very team-oriented and I work closely with the client, so it's a nice option for an accounting job for people that are somewhat outgoing or extroverted.

As an accountant, you will likely work long hours during tax season (January- April). There are tons of opportunities for good accountants, especially consulting if you like travel. I would recommend getting a CPA certification. It requires college credit 150hrs. to take the exam.

Nadia’s Answer

It depends on the size of the company that you work for. But it could vary from you being responsible for all the day to day accounting tasks, such as banking, payroll, sales recording, month end closing, budgeting etc., for the entire company to you being responsible for a part of the business, such as the manufacturing department vs distribution. In the end you will likely work longer hours in a smaller company and there will be a trend in when your work load is higher, such as month end/year end/tax season etc.
Hope this helps
