Hi Grayson,

Great question! Depending on the field, the day to day for a producer can vary, however, the theme of activities is usually the same.

A producer is responsible for organizing and executing a project, whether that project be a commercial, movie, or event. You have to keep track of all of the tasks that need to get done, their timeline, who is responsible for executing each task and making sure that all of these elements come together seamlessly. Your day to day will likely include leading meetings with various team members to make sure that everyone on the project is kept updated on the on-going tasks. You will need to check that tasks are being completed on time, and create contingency plans if certain tasks take longer than expected. You need to get approvals from stakeholders (this could be the president of a company or your manager) and make sure that the right people are looped in during the production process.

Depending on the field, there is a high chance you will have to work with outside vendors - meaning people who don't work at your company. Some of your day-to-day will be spent comparing various vendors that you have sourced yourself or have been recommended. You should be comfortable getting on the phone with these vendors, asking for quotes, getting legal contracts in place and managing their contribution to the project.

Overall, the main day-to-day tasks will involve working very closely with a lot of people and organizing all of the information for a project. If either or both of these excite you then you should look into being a producer!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

All the best,
Annie

Hey,

Great question. Producers in news televisions do pretty much what the above answer says.

However, a producer in a news show usually puts together a news segment. A sports producer is usually in charge of an entire show. They plan an entire half hour program.

So producers can vary in how much responsibility they have in an event or a show or a film.
