Michael’s Answer

I have spent 20+ years in the health and fitness industry in many different capacities including sports psychology. Here's my answers:
How many hours do you work in a typical week?
It can vary greatly depending on the people or teams you're working with. It can be as light as 20, or as great as 80! Be versatile.

If I were interested in pursuing your career, what classes do you think I should be taking in high school? What extracurricular activities should I pursue?
Take biology and chemistry classes to help you with these higher levels once you get to college. Also, volunteer to help out the sports teams and trainers at your school. They will most likely have a degree similar to the one you're pursuing.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The people I get to help and work with. When they succeed in any way its extremely rewarding.

Why did you pursue this career?
I love working with people and I love sports/health/fitness

How many athletes do you treat in a week?
Again it can vary depending on a team's schedule or time of year.

How much money are you getting from this career?
Starting will be relatively low while you build your experience, but that is typical of any industry. The farther you go with your education, the more money you can expect to draw in.

What are the most common problems that you as a sport psychologist?
Getting enough time needed to help the athletes I work with. Their schedules are often very packed, so your hours can greatly vary as a result.

What characteristics does someone need if they were to pursue a career in sports psychology?
Patience and passion. Great listening skills. Great communicator as well. Choose your words carefully before speaking.

I hope this helps! Best wishes!
