What are the steps/tips to starting a (plant) business?

I want to start a business when I graduate college, what would be the main steps that one would need to know to start a new business? If you had any tips or things that weren't known right away, that would be another question. #business #tips #steps

Nikhil’s Answer

The very important thing that you need before you start a business is Idea, you can sell products or you can provide services to customers to charge them. Once you finalized the idea start doing brainstorming and you may involve someone who wants to join your business.
Once the brainstorming is done you should start doing research it includes the study of existing players in this business, you may take feedback from consumers etc. Make a good questionnaire and do primary as well as secondary research from all aspects, here you will get a good idea about market as well as your product or service. Next step is to create prototype of your product or small presentation about what services you gonna offer in case of services. If your product or idea is unique you should try doing a patent for it. If you have enough fund to produce in large scale then try doing it else pitch your products or ideas to investors. Once you got enough fund then form a team and start your business.

Definitely you will need to research! If this is a business that's already out there, you can start learning from those businesses to see how they have been able to develop their own products, services, and what kind of customers are currently being catered to. Sonam and Nikhil provided great answers, but I would go and repeat again that research is extremely valuable.

Don't be afraid of failure! If this is the first business, take it with stride and work hard on it. From researching, brainstorming, and reaching out to customers, there's a lot of hands that are involved in the process. I would start now, even before you graduate college. College has many great resources, especially professors who can mentor and guide you throughout. Not only that, but depending on your school, there many be funds that could be used toward your business. Look around and ask your advisors if there are any opportunities available. I understand that some schools, especially business, have these programs where you can pitch your idea and potentially be selected for some funding.

Best of luck on your business!

Hi Jasmine,
I recognize your name from a previous questions about horticulture schools. It is very impressive that you are doing a lot of research, asking a lot of questions, and leaving no stone unturned. This is exactly how you make a life plan. This is the path to success, So very proud of you!
I can't really add to any of the previous answers, as they are all on point, and deserve your time and attention.
I would make one additional suggestion. Why not visit some the of plant stores in the area? Speak to the managers and get some behind the scenes insight in to what their business is already doing. Check out their bottom line. Are they making any money? Is there room for another plant store in your area, or do you need to reconsider your location.
Wishing the best of luck!
