What do you enjoy most about your job? What skills are most important in your field?

I'm a gymnast down in Fairbanks, Alaska and I injure myself quite a lot. I've been down to the Sports Medicine place and I absolutely love the idea of Sports Medicine. When I grow up, my goal is to me a Sports Medicine Orthopedic. #sportsmedicine #jobs #orthopedic #medicine

Hi Ava!

Great questions and sounds like you have an awesome career ahead!!

Enjoy most -
I am in Sales and represent Marriott International hotels! I love connecting with new clients on a regular basis and being able to meet new people, even it that means virtually or over the phone! This is also something you may find in common with the industry of sports med you are looking to get into. You will always be interacting with your clients and assisting them with their needs, injuries, and obstacles they face with their body when it comes to their sport or everyday living. Having a desire to be around others and empathize with their needs is going to be crucial for you in this industry!

Skills-
Some of the most transferrable skills that I have learned and continue to develop in my career are communication, active listening, and leadership! Being able to effectively communicate and get your message across even in difficult conversations with a co-worker, client, or even your boss, is a skill that you will learn by doing and with experience! Don't expect to be perfect 100% of the time, but do you part to learn more about effective communication by reading books, connecting with those older than you, and putting yourself our there for more opportunities!

Second, active listening. This one is huge! Especially for someone in your industry where you truly need to listen to the client to understand what they are explaining to you vs. listening to respond. Looking in to books on this will also help understand the full meaning of this. This goes hand in hand with communication. When you put it into practice, you will really understand!

Last but not least, leadership. Be vulnerable and encourage and motivate others as well as your self to put your self out there and try new things. Jump outside of your comfort zone and become uncomfortable, forcing yourself to figure things out a new way! Learning how to take chances and risks even when you may not have all the answers will provide you with the confidence for the next opportunity that comes your way. Your ability to believe in yourself and try new things will propel you to learn more, inspire those around you, and become a leader of your own path!

Hi Ava - I work for a large IT company that has a lot of different jobs. By the way, I was a government major in college focused on becoming a high school teacher, never did I think I would work for a technology company. A lot of big companies have different departments from HR, Education Services, Engineering, Sales, etc. Lucky enough, although I never became high school teacher, I now work in the Education Services department for my company. I personally love that I get to make an impact on people. Whether its bringing a group of new hires into the company, giving them a great experience, or in my role as a people manager today, I get to impact peoples experiences. You would assume that I would have needed some technical skills to work where I do, but that was not the case. As I have told many of my new hires before, we can teach people the technology, but its harder to teach people how to communicate... how to have a sense or urgency... how to be a hard worker. We lost sight of the professional skills that can make us successful in any field. So I would recommend pursuing your passion, but always look for opportunities to grow professionally. That is what will help you if you decide to change fields. Good luck!
