Surgeons do not actually work in the emergency room. There is a physician that works in the ER and they work their 8 or 12 hour shift and then another comes in to relieve them. Surgeons are consulted after the ER physician determines through an exam or diagnostics that the patient needs surgery. However, surgeons do not sit around in the ER waiting for a surgical case to come in.
Surgeons are physicians that also have clinic hours and see patients in a regular doctor's office- they just have extra training that allows them to do surgery too. There are also different types of surgeons: orthopedics- which would do surgery on bones, cardiothoracic surgeons- heart, lungs, esophagus, and other chest cavity organs, general surgeons- which is who you would see for some traumas, appendix, gallbladder, etc.

Surgeons don’t normally work in Emergency Rooms. They are sometimes called to evaluate or treat someone who is seen for trauma or possible surgical condition
