Where can I work with a Bachelors in Psychology?
I’m a high school senior and I’m certain that I want to study psychology. However, I’m scared that i’ll have to attend higher education and put myself in more debt than already in order to do the work that I’d like to. What jobs can I get with a Bachelors in psychology? #medicine #doctor

Many people who have a Bachelor's in psychology work as counselors in many different areas. You should consider researching different career areas that require a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Hi Hailli, psychology is a great field to enter, unfortunately in recent years it has become very oversaturated. There has been a significant increase in students pursuing psychology degrees as well as an increase in students who don't get accepted into medical school/PA school moving over into psychology. This over saturation has made it much more difficult to find a good job with just a bachelors degree. If your goal is to work as a counselor you have to go to graduate school and at a minimum get a masters degree. For people wishing to pursue this but first take a break and make some money the most common job is as a mental health tech because it gives valuable experience in the world of inpatient psychiatric care. However these jobs are becoming more and more hard to come by because there are more applicants than jobs so they often require extensive psychology volunteer hours to even be considered. A mental health tech is also the most general, broad job option available to psychology majors but certainly not the only one. Though you cannot be a counselor with a bachelors there are other options available. Having a psychology degree can be useful to get into low level positions at group homes, homeless shelters, and nonprofit organizations that help the community.
I also see that you used the tag doctor. You do not have to become a doctor to work in psychology, as I mentioned before you can be a counselor with a masters in psychology. However you could also become a psychiatrist, which is a physician. Psychiatrists have the additional skill of being able to prescribe medications or top of diagnosing and doing therapy with patients like a psychologist does. Becoming a doctor takes a bachelors degree, then you have to take the MCAT exam before applying to medical school. Medical school is an additional four years of schooling and is by no means cheap. After medical school you will complete a residency, for psychiatrists it is often 4-5 years depending on your program. You will be paid as a resident but not as much as you will be paid once out of residency and a "full-fledged" physician. Most residents make around $60,000-$80,000. There has been extensive research recently on the ability to pay off loans accrued from becoming a physician and even the lowest paid specialities are able to pay off their entire loans in a decent amount of time so long as they are not living too lavishly. So if your desire is to become a physician know that it is a very long and difficult (and expensive) process, but it will be worth it in the end if that is what you really want to do and you will have the means to pay off the loans required to get there.
Best of luck
