Hi Angelica,
Schedule flexibility depends on the career choice and things have changed drastically with COVID-19. For instance, I work in the Technology industry and typically they are fairly flexible with working from home (prior to pandemic). Also, if you needed to take off a day of work you had a flexible schedule to do so as long as you communicate clearly to your manager prior to the day off.
For the medical field, I know this is different. My mother was a surgical nurse for years. Typically she had to be on call when she was on the floor, however as she built up seniority she was able to determine how much call and when she wanted to do. For instance, not on holidays towards the end of her career. There were also times she was willing to pick up more call from colleagues (say around Christmas time for more money). For anesthesiologists, I would assume this would be similar. When first starting your career expect more call and on days senior team members would not want to be on call- weekends and holidays. As you gain tenure, I would assume you could pick and choose when to be on call.
Hope this helps!
