Julia - there are a number of positions related to working with children with special needs or in a counseling capacity. Most of these positions require advanced degrees, but they pay nicely. Some larger churches will have volunteer programs where you can get your feet wet working with special needs children in a non-paid capacity. This is a good way to see whether you have the temperament and desire to do so.
Another option is to go on staff with a large summer camp. Some of the larger ones have full time staff year round that are busy supporting and planning for summer sessions. The only challenge here is that the job becomes more administrative over time, and less about working with individual kids.

Pursue teaching! What do you want to teach? Montessori, private or public school systems.
Other ideas: mentoring programs, museums, tutoring/developmental programs. Find what excites and fascinates you to steer you in the right direction.

Hi!
My girlfriend recently went into the field, and she has found that being a private tutor pays really well. However, as Sarah said above, mentoring is also a very good route to go. I think that at the end of the day, as long as you are passionate about something, you should be good to go! :)
